Katie Smith

Katie Smith is ISSR's Associate Director of Research Administration and Operations.  Dr. Smith manages grant and budget development and pre-award services. Prior to her work in ISSR, Dr. Smith was a Research Administrator in the Manning College of Information and Computer Science at UMass Amherst.

Before moving to Massachusetts, Dr. Smith was an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at The University of Southern Mississippi. She earned both her PhD and MA in Anthropology from Purdue University. Her primary research focus is examining diet, nutrition, and health in captive housed primates [Western Lowland Gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) and Garnett’s Greater Bushbaby (Otolemur garnettii], with an emphasis on improving captive housed welfare and using captive primates as an evolutionary model for modern humans.
